She spent most of the day watching the comings and goings from the Care Home before finally giving up and walking home. Later, as darkness started to fall, Susan arrived back to her small flat despondent with life. She ate some stale food from her fridge not even sure what it was. She found a bottle of sleeping tablets and briefly considered taking the whole bottle before finally dispensing out two and knocking them back quickly followed by a glass of vodka. She slumped down into the alcohol stained chair and quickly fell into a deep sleep. That night, Alice also fell into a deep sleep and entered REM state. Behind her closed eye lids, her eyeballs danced and moved from side to side with no rhythm or predictability. In this dream state, she saw her adversary and ex care assistant, Susan Birchfield driving in her car. Alice watched from a position in the back seat as the car hurtled at speed down an unrecognized road in the dark. On-coming headlights flashed to signal danger to the driver, but the driver did not react. Both hands on the steering wheel showed the whites of Susan’s knuckles as she held firm to her direction. The noise of the highly revved engine in the small car was almost deafening. From the back seat, Alice looked up and glimpsed Susan’s blood shot eyes staring back at her from the rear-view mirror. She felt the rage and anger in those eyes.About the AuthorDerek Finn grew up in Waterford, Ireland and worked in the pharmaceutical industry for many years before he took up a passion to study and work in psychology.
